September 11th: Horseshoe Crabs: Biology, Ecology and the Florida Horseshoe Crab Watch
Michael Sipos, Florida Sea Grant Agent For Collier County

Horseshoe crabs have been roving the ocean bottom for over 400 million years but aren’t actually crabs at all!? Moreover, each and every one of us have been unknowingly helped by these prehistoric creatures as their blood contains a compound used to test drug sterility. Do I have your attention? Come to this seminar to learn more fun facts about these interesting creatures and how you can get involved in the Florida Horseshoe Crab Watch citizen science monitoring program to make sure these critters are around for another 400 million years!

Mike Sipos is a Florida Sea Grant Agent for University of Florida IFAS Extension office in Collier County and a native to Southwest Florida. Michael received his BS in Zoology and MS in Fisheries Aquatic Sciences from the University of Florida. Mike’s previous experience includes being a university fisheries biologist and working with aquaculture operations from FL to around the world. In his current position, Mike educates stakeholders to support his programmatic areas of sustainable fisheries, environmental literacy and stewardship.
